Cal Day 1997 to focus on CyberSemester

Karen Eft

Cal Day this year is Saturday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This annual "open house" at UC Berkeley provides an opportunity for the community to get an insider's glimpse at the many fascinating activities occurring on campus throughout the year. For those of us who work and study at Cal, we get the chance to see what is going on in other areas of our world-famous institution. Details are available on the following Web site:

In recognition of the current high-tech flavor of higher education, Cal Day's emphasis this year will be on CyberSemester; see the Web site CyberSemester Highlights and News (http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~cybersem/). Departments will be gearing their presentations, lectures, and demonstrations toward their CyberSemester programs. There will be many computer- and network-related events, as well as demonstrations of how Internet technology is being used to support instruction and research in more traditional disciplines.

IST's Workstation and Microcomputer Facilities staff will present a day-long series of hands-on demonstrations of computer resources on campus. Demos will be held in 2105 Valley Life Sciences Building at 10:00-11:00 a.m., 12:30-1:30 p.m., 1:45-2:45 p.m., and 3:00-4:00 p.m. Also, IST will have a central campus table on Sproul Plaza publicizing the services we provide. A complete schedule of Cal Day events, including a "Computers" section, is available at Cal Day 1997 Schedule (http://www.urel.berkeley.edu/UREL_1/CalDay/schedule.html).
