As of July 1, charges are being levied for the use of the campus data network. These are parallel to the monthly recurring charges for a telephone; they are separate from the charges for installation. Campus units will be receiving their first network billing statements (via the Web) in early August.
The background and other general information regarding these charges is on the Campus Network Funding Plan website (http://cns-pao.berkeley.edu/netfunding). Based on the "lines of business" model developed in conjunction with Western Telecommunications Consulting, the current cost of a node is determined to be $20.70 per month. (For more information on "lines of business" see Communications network "lines of business" in the Summer 2001 issue of BC&C.) The chart of account string associated with each node determines its eligibility for subsidy (please see the website cited above). Already existing nodes (as of July 1) that are eligible for subsidy will be fully subsidized; nodes installed after that date and eligible for subsidy will be partially subsidized.
The per month per node charges for this fiscal year will be:
full subsidy
$0.00
partial subsidy
$9.96
no subsidy
$20.70
Your billing statement will show the charges to the account as well as the Central Campus subsidy applicable to the account. Cleanup of the network inventory data is ongoing. Questions about that and the network charges should be directed to netnodes@uclink.berkeley.edu. Questions about your account itself are best directed to cnsbill@socrates.berkeley.edu.
