2002 Summer Faculty Technology Program

Judy Stern, Educational Technology Services

This past June, for the fifth year in a row, the Summer Faculty Technology Program provided Berkeley faculty from a broad variety of disciplines with an opportunity to learn about ways to use technology in their teaching. Held in Dwinelle Hall during the week of June 3, and attended by over 20 faculty members, the program was sponsored by Educational Technology Services in collaboration with the University Library. Additional support was provided by the Berkeley Language Center and the College of Engineering Interdisciplinary Studies Program.

The program began on the afternoon of June 3 with a welcome by Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education Christina Maslach, followed by several faculty presentations.

During most of the rest of the week, faculty attendees spent their mornings in computer labs, learning how to use a variety of tools useful in instruction. Sessions included:

After lunch each day, faculty participants attended presentations and discussions led by other faculty and staff members already using educational technologies. These included a variety of presentations on how faculty are using course websites, PowerPoint presentations, and Internet conferencing; additional topics covered were plagiarism, web accessibility, and intellectual property.

Late afternoons were devoted to demonstrations of image scanners, digital cameras, video software and hardware, web videoconferencing, and classroom technologies.

Evaluations filled out by participants showed a very high level of satisfaction, with most respondents saying that the overall program was "very worthwhile", and many providing very positive comments, such as:

"This was an excellent institute. The content was well-organized and the structure of the institute was comprehensive. Thank you!"

"It was excellent — very well-balanced in terms of hands-on and presentations/demos. All facilitators were extremely helpful. I really appreciated the tailoring of the workshop to the participants needs & interests."

"I have learned an immense amount of useful information, from the small shortcuts to the big issues about technology and pedagogy."

Suggestions for improvement included doing a better job preparing Macintosh users for the Windows computers used in the program, and structuring the program so as to give participants more time to practice what they had learned.

Planning for next summer's event will begin in the fall semester. Faculty can send email to training@media.berkeley.edu if they'd like to receive more information about next summer's event when it becomes available.
