iNews: Data center move

New campus data center and available services

Shel Waggener, IST-–CCS

The planned move to the new campus data center in late June will provide the campus with many upgraded services, including the capability to house more departmental servers in the new location.

The main reason for relocating the data center is to house mission-critical campus services — email, web, e-Berkeley services, student records, and business systems — in a seismically secure building. The new building offers much greater physical security for UC Berkeley online services, greatly reducing the risk of significant interruptions in the event of a disaster.

The new data center is located off-campus in a seismically constructed, physically secured building with restricted cardkey access. The facility is managed by Central Computing Services (CCS) on a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week schedule. A high-speed 1GB redundant network is installed, with system availability monitored around the clock. During any emergency, clients are contacted and system status information is posted immediately to the campus through an offsite website http://systemstatus.berkeley.edu/.

The electrical outages of the past are history. The new data center is equipped with conditioned power that is designed to run uninterrupted. During a power outage an onsite diesel generator transitions power to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), thereby maintaining power to servers.

The heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system is designed to ensure continuous operation during equipment repair or scheduled maintenance. All air is circulated and filtered to remove dust and contaminants. In the unlikely event of a fire, an advanced FM200 fire-suppression system is in place to keep the fire from spreading.

Managed services to be available

Beginning in late fall 2004, Central Computing Services (CCS) will be offering a new, recharge, colocation service, allowing campus departments to house their departmental servers in the new, state-of-the-art data center. Colocation provides departments with expertly managed services, proactive server administration, and other cost-effective resources to ensure an optimal and secure server environment for departmental application system support.

A recharge rate schedule for the colocation service will be available by early fall. We expect that the benefits of the new data center environment and the new administration services will, for many departments, outweigh the costs of supporting their own servers. From a campuswide perspective, we expect that providing expert server support in the new data center environment will help eliminate redundancies and increase overall efficiency.

Managed colocation services will include:

CCS will assess client needs to reach a cost-effective solution that provides high availability, maximum data integrity, and optimal resource usage. Departments interested in colocation options in the new data center can contact us at for an appointment.

Key services to the campus include:

CCS supports the following operating systems:

Licensing requirements and costs for each operating system vary. Some are free.
