ETS fall 2004 workshop offerings

Judy Stern, Educational Technology Services

ETS is sponsoring a number of workshops this semester to help you learn about preparing instructional materials for classroom or web use.

Course website tools orientation, requiring no preregistration, will be held on September 8 and October 19, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, in 4 Dwinelle. Attending one of these short orientations is your best bet for getting an overview of campus-supported website building systems.

A variety of hands-on workshops (which require preregistration) are also being offered:

For the above hands-on sessions, you must register for the specific date you'd like to attend by filling out the form at http:// ets.berkeley.edu/Training/trainingRequestForm.htm. Please register at least one week before the session you wish to attend; if there are an insufficient number of people registered, the workshop will be cancelled.

Workshop descriptions

Course website tools orientation. Want to learn about the three course website building systems — CourseWeb, Blackboard, and Course Gallery — that the UC Berkeley campus is currently supporting? Come to any of these presentations sponsored by ETS during which we'll demonstrate these tools, cover the administrative and pedagogical reasons for using each, and answer the questions you have about when you might want to use these or other tools.

Getting started with Blackboard. Hands-on workshop, designed to help you get started building your own course website. Topics covered include navigating in Blackboard, adding basic course information, posting announcements, uploading documents, adding course images, and communicating with students.

Course website open lab. If you feel like you want knowledgeable staff around to answer questions as you work on your course website (Blackboard or CourseWeb), come to one of these self-directed labs. You may register for the open lab without registering for a Blackboard workshop.

Using Word's annotation features. How to use Microsoft Word features that allow you to interact with your students over their written documents. Learn to use Track Changes and Comments.

Introduction to PowerPoint. Learn how to create a simple presentation that can be displayed in class or published on the Web. The focus of the class is on features most useful to instruction.

Processing images for classroom or web use. Using Photoshop Elements, practice manipulating images by cropping, resizing, adjusting color and contrast, adding text overlay, and changing image resolution.
