In June, the Museum Informatics Project (MIP), a unit within Information Systems and Technology, received a medal from the Computerworld Honors Program for its Business Intelligence for Scholarly Collections project. The awards were established in 1988 in order to recognize unique uses of information technology for the benefit of society. Debra Kelly, the project technical lead, accepted the Laureate Gold Medal at the awards ceremony held at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. on June 5, 2006.

UC Berkeley is renowned for the size and quality of its libraries, research facilities, and museum collections. To provide the academic community with the greatest value from the collections, MIP launched the business intelligence initiative with the goal of enabling collection managers to

As a result, participating campus curators and staff have improved operational efficiency, gained greater control of their holdings, and improved access to their collections.

MIP's project was nominated for the award in the Education and Academia category by Business Objects, Inc., a member of the Computerworld Honors Program board and the supplier of the business intelligence software used for the project. Kelly, a museum informatics specialist, submitted a case study describing the project, the participating collections, and the project goals and successes. Current project participants are the History of Art department's Visual Resource Collection, the UC Botanical Garden, and the Berkeley Language Center. The accepted case study will now be archived and available internationally via 250 universities, libraries, and research institutions as well as through the Computerworld Honors Program website (http://www.cwhonors.org/). The Museum Informatics Project was also awarded a Laureate Gold Medal in 1998 by the precursor to the current Honors Program, the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Program.

As of mid-July of this year, MIP is a unit within the Data Services group in the newly reorganized Information Services and Technology division.
