New IST Service Status page launch scheduled

May 01, 2008

Harold Pakulat, IST—Client Services

Approximately mid-May, 2008, IST will launch a new, improved service status page. This page provides campus customers timely information about any service-related disruptions. There is an increasing emphasis on the status page as the preferred source for service status information. The new status page provides new features in a substantially more robust environment and will allow timelier posting of status information. The current, and subsequently new status page, is available at http://systemstatus.berkeley.edu/.

Some project details

The old status page system was limited in functionality, cumbersome for staff to use, and susceptible to single points of failure. The page was hosted by EarthLink and involved a Macromedia/Dreamweaver combination on a rather old workstation with some poorly-understood template dependencies. Formerly, the old status page could only be modified from this workstation and no RSS feeds were offered.

The design criteria for the new IST status page were as follows:

After investigating in-house and external solutions, the IST CalWeb-in-a-Box solution was adopted. (See the CalWeb-in-a-Box Pilot page for details.) This solution met all design objectives at a competitive cost.

The CalWeb-in-a-Box solution offers Joomla, Drupal, and WordPress management tools as well as a MySQL database. The new IST Service Status page will be managed by the Service Desk with WordPress. Service Desk staff have been trained in WordPress and will continue to update the status page.

This project was led by Kevin Haney, IST—Client Services and Elise Jok, IST—Application Services.
