On May 11, CCS upgraded the IBM 9672's operating system MVS/ESA to its current state-of-the-art replacement, OS/390. The IBM 9672 runs most of the mission-critical administrative applications for the campus. Besides being more efficient in its exploitation of hardware, OS/390 equips campus staff to integrate recent third-party software releases and to accommodate future enhancements. For example, OS/390 is "Year 2000 compliant." In addition, Open Edition, a component of OS/390, is branded as an X/Open XPG4 UNIX system, and can operate independently.
The current OS/390 software, Release 1, is scheduled to be upgraded to Release 3 in December.
