UC / CSU video conference on Sakai project

Fred M. Beshears, Educational Technology Services

In January 2004, faculty and administrators from nine UC campuses and CSU CalPoly gathered for an Educational Technology Services—sponsored video conference on the Sakai project, a ground-breaking initiative to create open-source course management tools for higher education.

Sakai is being launched with a $2.4 million startup grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, and with an additional $4 million in services from the university members on its governing board, which includes representatives from the University of Michigan, Indiana University, MIT, Stanford, the Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI), and the uPortal consortium.

Sakai will also draw support from schools that join the Sakai Educational Partners Program (SEPP), which now includes UC Berkeley and may soon include at least three other UC campuses: Merced, Davis, and UCLA. Each SEPP member will contribute $10,000 in cash per year for three years.

To learn more about the project, visit the Sakai website (http://www.sakaiproject.org/). Additional information on Sakai and SEPP can be found on the ETS Sakai video conference website (http://ets.berkeley.edu/etstandards/sakai/). And, the ETS Learning Systems group will be presenting their plans to participate in SEPP in a forthcoming iNews (/) article.

Additional readings on Sakai are listed below.
