Departmental Technology Solutions now supports online training with Macromedia Breeze

Gary Thackeray, IST–ASD

Departmental Technology Solutions (DTS), a unit of the Administrative Systems Department (ASD), has purchased the online presentation tool Macromedia Breeze and introduced a new service to help departments and central offices get started developing online training.

Breeze lets trainers take standard PowerPoint presentations, personalize them with voice-over audio, and deliver them through any standard web browser. Using Breeze, campus users can produce online presentations, and turn these presentations into courses by adding questions and quizzes. Once students are enrolled in a course, course owners can track their results by user, by question, or by course.

DTS will manage the Breeze application and help customers develop presentations and create courses. The Breeze environment will be maintained in the Data Center for monitoring and security. The pricing structure will include an initial start-up fee and an annual fee for unlimited publishing access to Breeze.

This project has been in pilot phase for the last several months with several units developing online training. Presentations and courses have been developed to test staff on lab safety, demonstrate new application features, and review basic computer procedures. The feedback from the pilot users has been enthusiastic and the production phase will be launched as soon as work is completed to incorporate CalNet, UC Berkeley's standard security authentication system.
