On Wednesday, January 17, 2007, Vice Chancellor for Research Burnside
sent a message
to the campus research community announcing an exciting
and innovative new program to help research groups back up their
critical data.
IST is the technical partner for this program and we inadvertently
provided preliminary planning dates rather than the correct production
information on the timing of the program to VCR Burnside. This article
clarifies the program.
The approved recharge rate for the UCBackup service is
$0.50 per gigabyte of occupancy per month until further notice.
Campus researchers who wish to use this service are
eligible to have the monthly cost of the service subsidized by
50 percent.
IST is now developing a revised rate proposal
which may change the
monthly cost of the service. We expect the new rate to be
approximately $0.30 per gigabyte of occupancy per month. We expect
that this rate will not be effective prior to March 1.
The 50 percent subsidy for researchers will apply to the cost at
the new rate when the new rate is implemented. So, a researcher who
signs up today, at a rate of $0.50 per GB per month, will be billed
$0.25 per GB per month with the VC Research subsidy paying the other
$0.25 per GB per month. Once the new rate is implemented, the researcher will
continue to receive a subsidy at 50 percent of the new rate until the
subsidy funding is exhausted after a minimum of 100 terabytes of
capacity have been used.
Based upon current overall occupancy for campus backup
services, we anticipate that the subsidy will be maintained for 6-18
months.
