The Career Compass job standards initiative will be rolled out on campus
for nonrepresented jobs beginning in March 2008, and will continue
throughout the summer. Starting March 3, the campus will begin
mapping jobs in the following fields: Information Technology, Finance,
General Administration, Human Resources, and Research Administration.
For an overall job mapping timeline of all fields, see the Job
Mapping Timeline for Non-represented Positions web page.
Employees who are performing professional, supervisory, or managerial
jobs in these fields are the focus of the efforts at this phase of the
project. Employees who perform jobs that are represented by a union
will not be mapped until 2009, depending upon completion of those job
standards and negotiation with the unions. Academic and student
employees are outside the scope of this project.
Before we begin
You are encouraged to become familiar with the objectives of Career
Compass and the Job Standards initiative as the campus approaches this
important work.
You can view the job standards for nonrepresented positions on
the Berkeley
Job Builder web page.
If you are new to the Career Compass initiative, you may want to
orient yourself to the language of the initiative by consulting the
Overview
and Glossary
on the Career Compass website.
By March 3, final edits to the Berkeley Job Builder will be
completed for the first five job fields. At that time, each job
standard can be downloaded into a "job description template". The
job description template is prefilled with much of the information
managers and supervisors will need to complete new job descriptions
for each employee.
Regular Open
Sessions describing the job mapping process are
scheduled for all employees to attend. Dates and times are on the
Career Compass website. Alternately, you can learn about mapping by
going through the e-Training module available through
the Career Compass website.
Those of you who are managers and supervisors will review the
jobs your employees currently perform and map those to the new job
standards. To prepare for mapping, it will be helpful to gather
together all available current job descriptions. If you do not have
a job description for an employee, now is the time to work with your
employee to develop a brief list of job responsibilities.
It is important to note that, in the interest of fairness and
equity, all nonrepresented positions will be officially converted
to the new system at the same time. Accordingly, while supervisors
and managers will make mapping recommendations for employees during
this period, no changes will occur to employee records until HR
Compensation reviews the recommendations and makes final mapping
decisions for all nonrepresented employees (currently targeted for
the end of 2008).
