The Information Technology Architecture Task Force (ITATF) has formed a standing subcommittee to provide input to Communication and Network Services (CNS) about technical and policy issues related to the campus network. The ITATF recognized a need for CNS's customers, departmental technical managers, to have a voice in standards and technology adopted by CNS. The subcommittee's charter, available on the Charter for Standing Networking Subcommittee of the ITATF web page (http://ita.berkeley.edu:4259/itatf/netcharge.html), identifies the goals of increasing the participation of the campus in the decision-making process of CNS regarding technical specifications, and facilitating the flow of information from CNS to campus technical staff. This includes making recommendations regarding technical standards and policies related to services provided by CNS to departments on campus.
The subcommittee will provide an ongoing review of issues pertinent to CNS and campus departments. Several issues have already been identified, and the subcommittee will actively solicit suggestions for issues to be considered in the future. Some of the issues already identified include:
The committee, which meets monthly, is cochaired by Helen Kelly of University Health Services and Yau-Man Chan of the College of Chemistry. The membership of the subcommittee comprises ITATF members or their designates, representing several units on campus, and CNS liaisons, including CNS Director Cliff Frost. The charter and minutes of meetings are posted online and linked from the main ITATF website (http://ita.berkeley.edu:4259/). If you have questions about this subcommittee or would like to participate, please contact Helen Kelly, hkelly@uhs.berkeley.edu, or Yau-Man Chan, yauman@cchem.berkeley.edu.
