Departmental UNIX support service

The Academic Computing Services (ACS) group within IST's Central Computing Services (CCS) department offers support to departments who are running their own UNIX servers, as well as to those using the central general-access system Socrates. By leveraging our training and experience, we can cost-effectively provide expert, ongoing, or backup support of UNIX systems to individual departments. Using a recharge rate of $58/hour, we can tailor a support package either on a time-only basis or on an estimated-cost contract basis. For information on how to use our services, see the Academic Computing Services website (http://socrates.berkeley.edu/acs/) or send email to consult@socrates.berkeley.edu. The following types of support are offered:

Emergency or short-term support

Short-term or emergency services include security audits and security enhancements for your server. We can provide system administration support to upgrade the operating system or perform reconstruction after a break-in or other loss. Specific programming needs can be met for new or unusual projects such as web server-related applications, data analysis with SAS, or system utilities written in C, Perl, or UNIX shell commands.

Ongoing support

ACS can contract with a department to provide system administration services for their UNIX server. Under such an arrangement, levels of service can be specified which meet the department's needs and budget for frequency of upgrades, security, and monitoring.

Backup support

For those departments who have a single system administrator, ACS can provide backup support for the server as required by scheduled vacations or other absences of the primary support person.
