Search help
The easiest way to search is to type one or more words
into the "Enter search words" box, leaving the options at the defaults
(the example boxes below are not actually hooked up to the search):
Then click on Search or press Enter or Return.
With Match set to All,
the search finds documents that contain all the words in the list as if
the search expression were "dialup AND modem".
The following rules apply to the search words:
-
Case (capitalization) is ignored.
The words "DIALUP" and "dialup" produce the same results.
-
Common short English words
("it", "of", "the", "and", "that", "this", etc)
are not indexed,
so a search on such words produces no results.
Changing Match to Any may fix the situation.
Other short words (two or more letters) are indexed,
including IST-relevant words such as
PC, NT, IU, BAI, etc.
-
Words must be spelled out in full.
Pattern matching or initial substrings ("dial*")
are not supported.
-
Numbers are not indexed, so, for example,
a search for "MacOS 9.0" produces no results.
-
Words cannot be grouped into phrases you
cannot search for documents that contain the phrase "dialup modem"
where the search words are adjacent.
-
Punctuation is automatically eliminated "dial-up" becomes "dialup"
and "user's" becomes "users".
-
The search takes a "fuzzy" approach to common word endings.
For example, "dialup AND modem" is automatically expanded to
"(dialup OR dialups) AND (modem OR modems)".
-
The top of the "Search results" page shows
what search expression
was actually used in the search.
-
If you don't get results,
change Match to Any,
eliminate common short English words,
or check the spelling of the remaining words.
-
This option restricts the search to a particular IST web server.
-
Any IST retrieves documents from any IST web server
that is included in the index no restriction.
-
The other options refer to the web servers shown in the following table:
-
All tells the search to look for documents that contain
all of the entered search words, e.g.,
as if the search expression were "dialup AND modem".
-
Any tells the search to look for documents that contain
any of the entered search words, e.g.,
as if the search expression were "dialup OR modem".
-
Boolean allows the search expression to be a simple Boolean expression
consisting of the entered search words, AND, OR, and parentheses.
Boolean NOT is not supported.
Case is ignored.
- Score posts search results
in order of decreasing "relevance",
starting with the highest-ranked documents.
More stars indicate a better match,
in that the search words
(a) match keywords,
(b) appear in the document title,
(c) appear near the beginning of the document,
(d) appear frequently in the document.
- Time posts search results in chronological order,
most recent first.
- Title posts search results in alphabetical order
by document <TITLE>.
- You can also Reverse any of the above.
-
Long posts the results in a long format,
showing some of the context.
-
Short posts the results in a short format,
showing only the star ranking and the title.
